October 5 - Bloody Mary Day
NY Times’ “The Moment” blog reports that NY mayor Bloomberg has declared 10/5 to be Bloody Mary Day. I haven’t seen any other reports of this, but what the hell. I’ll bite. I’m all for fake holidays too.
The author, Jill Santopietro, says:
Why Oct. 5 and why now? Because the Bloody Mary celebrates its 75th birthday this month. Its alleged creator — Fernand Petiot, known as Pete — mixed the spicy, tomato-based cocktail in New York City in the fall of 1934.
Anyway, here’s one of their featured recipes for you to celebrate with:
The St. Regis Red Snapper (Bloody Mary)
- 1 ounce vodka, preferably Belvedere
- 2 ounces tomato juice
- 6 to 8 drops lemon juice
- 2 large pinches salt
- 1/3 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 dashes Tabasco sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Ice
- 1 wedge of lemon.
Stir the vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, salt, pepper, Tabasco and Worcestershire in a mixing glass filled with ice until combined and chilled. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Garnish with a wedge of lemon. Makes 1 cocktail.
