    The Cocktail Renaissance

Robert Messenger writes about the craft of cocktails in The Weekly Standard:

An Old-Fashioned is a sugar cube wetted down with two to three large dashes of Angostura bitters and crushed until no trace of the crystals remains. Add some water—not much, the amount depends on the quality of your brown—two ounces of excellent rye whiskey (or bourbon, of course), and three cubes of ice. Stir and let it sit for a moment while you slice a nice stripe of lemon peel—all peel, none of the white pith—to squeeze over. (You’ll see the slick of citrus oil as you raise the glass for your first sip.) It’s perfection incarnate. Yet if you order one in that random bar, the likelihood is that you’ll be brought something involving simple syrup, club soda, maraschino cherries, orange slices, too much ice, and good god knows what else.

October 5 - Bloody Mary Day

NY Times’ “The Moment” blog reports that NY mayor Bloomberg has declared 10/5 to be Bloody Mary Day. I haven’t seen any other reports of this, but what the hell. I’ll bite. I’m all for fake holidays too.

    The author, Jill Santopietro, says:

Why Oct. 5 and why now? Because the Bloody Mary celebrates its 75th birthday this month. Its alleged creator — Fernand Petiot, known as Pete — mixed the spicy, tomato-based cocktail in New York City in the fall of 1934.

Anyway, here’s one of their featured recipes for you to celebrate with:

The St. Regis Red Snapper (Bloody Mary)

    • 1 ounce vodka, preferably Belvedere
    • 2 ounces tomato juice
    • 6 to 8 drops lemon juice
    • 2 large pinches salt
    • 1/3 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    • 2 dashes Tabasco sauce
    • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • Ice
    • 1 wedge of lemon.
    • Stir the vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, salt, pepper, Tabasco and Worcestershire in a mixing glass filled with ice until combined and chilled. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Garnish with a wedge of lemon. Makes 1 cocktail.
